Oops! How to Edit Social Media Posts

Whether it's a bad decision or just a typo, you can usually make it go away

We've all been there: We posted something regrettable on social media in a moment of anger or spotted a misspelled word. Depending on how you use social media, none of this might matter. But, if you're a stickler for detail, there are ways to edit your posts on most social media sites.

Check out the following descriptions and instructions for editing social media posts. Note that the instructions are based on a particular type of device and operating system; the process for others may vary.

Twitter
We're starting with Twitter because we want you to know right up front that you can't edit a Twitter post. If you want to change a tweet, you'll have to delete it entirely and repost. Here's how to delete a tweet using a Windows PC:

  1. In the left rail of your home page, select Profile.
  2. On your profile page, scroll to the tweet you want to delete.
  3. In the upper-right corner of the tweet, select the down-arrow and choose Delete.
  4. In the Delete Tweet? dialog box, select Delete.

Facebook
Facebook makes it pretty easy to edit your posts, though you should be aware that edits are visible to anyone viewing the post. Here are the steps for editing a Facebook post on a Windows PC:

  1. On your profile page, scroll to the post you want to edit.
  2. In the upper-right corner of the post, select the Menu (three-dot) icon and choose Edit post.
  3. In the Edit Post window, make your changes, then select Save.

If you've posted a photo along with a caption, you can add or remove photos. Here's how:

  1. Navigate to the post you want to edit.
  2. In the upper-right corner of the post, select the Menu (three-dot) icon and choose Edit post.
  3. In the Edit Post window, to remove a photo, hover over it and select the X that appears in the upper-right corner.
  4. To add a photo, select the plus sign surrounded by a dotted box. Select the photo from your hard drive.
  5. To save your changes, select Save.

To make changes within a photo album, navigate to the album and, next to the album name, select Edit. From there you can add or remove photos, change captions, change person or location tags, or move photos to a different album.

Instagram
Once you've posted a photo along with a caption on Instagram, you can change the caption, account tags, location tag, and alt text, but not the photo itself. Here's how to edit an Instagram post on an Android device:

  1. From your Instagram profile, select the post you want to edit.
  2. In the upper-right corner of the post, select the Menu (three-dot) icon and choose Edit.
  3. In the Edit Info screen, make your changes to the caption.
  4. To change the alt text, select Edit Alt Text. To change account tags, select Tag People. To change the location, select Add Location or the location already selected under your account name.
  5. In the upper-right corner, select the checkmark to save.

Pinterest
Pinterest allows you to edit a number of elements of a pin, including which board (and section if applicable) it's pinned to, the title, and the description. Here's how to edit a pin using a Windows PC:

  1. Open the board that your pin is in and locate the pin.
  2. With your cursor, hover over the pin and select the Edit (pencil) icon. Or open the pin and, in the upper-left corner, select the Edit (pencil) icon.
  3. Make your changes, then select Save.

LinkedIn
As a LinkedIn user, you might be particularly conscious of things like spelling and grammar, given that the site is designed for business use. You want to make a good impression on colleagues, bosses, or prospective customers. Note that, as with other platforms, you can only change text elements of your post, not images or videos; if you want to change those elements, you can delete and repost. Here's how to edit a LinkedIn post using a Windows PC:

  1. From your home page, in the left rail, select your name to get to your profile.
  2. On your profile, scroll to the Activity section and select See all.
  3. On the Activity page, find the post you want to edit.
  4. In the upper-right corner of the post, select the Menu (three-dot) icon and choose Edit post.
  5. Make your changes, then select Save.

Online Tools Can Help You Avoid Typos
If you're more afraid of grammar errors than saying something you'll later regret, you might want to look into online grammar checkers, which are like a helpful English teacher standing over your shoulder. One of the most well-known is Grammarly (grammarly.com), which is an extension that you add to the Chrome browser to check everything you write online. Grammarly is free for the basic version or you can pay for more features. Check out firstsiteguide.com/grammar-checker-tools for a list of other similar tools.
